“RAINBOW HOME” Shelter
In an effort to broaden its services to vulnerable children, Asha-Kiran has established a partnership with New Vision NGO and Rainbow Homes in Pune, to offer protection to the most vulnerable sector of society: street girls.
The reason for girls being the focus of this program is that, due to their gender, they are the most deprived. Aside from not having stable homes, they are often forced to beg, are easy prey to sexual crimes that are rarely reported, or end up being prostitutes or commiting petty crimes to survive. Most are orphaned, others live with a single parent or neglectful parents who use drugs, are violent or live in abject poverty.
On the other hand, little sensitivity is shown to their problems due to the public’s overexposure to extreme poverty and the multiple social ills prevalent in India. The endless influx of migrants from rural areas and villages to big cities in search of work, renders the challenge even greater.
A substantial reduction in the number of street girls requires economically viable and innovative solutions on a large scale. Failing that, local and international NGOs do their best to counteract the harmful effects of lack of care and protection of these children. Thus, the Rainbow Home project cooperates with local, regional and federal authorities in order to further the sustainability of the program in the long run.
At the Shelter, street girls can find the stimuli and the support they need to change their present situation and have a more promising future. They are given lodging, access to mainstream education, academic support, health care, nutritious food, health and recreational facilities, all set within a loving, regular home environment, surrounded by caregivers and other girls like them, while staying in touch with their families.
Their admission into state schools allows them to have access to the education that their social status denies them and, through support classes and other activities, their socialization with students from more privileged castes is promoted. The program also acts as a catalyst in their communities, encouraging children of low-income homes who drop out of school to continue their studies without having to worry about the stigma of their social status.
Asha-Kiran contributes to make this project a reality by offering you the possibility of sponsoring street girls directly.
