Ahimsa: teaching respect for life

What is Ahimsa? It is a profound respect for life in all its forms. In India, non-violence is considered one of the highest virtues and an essential pillar of coexistence.

In this session with the children at our Day Care Centers, we discussed the meaning of respectful behavior in everyday life: the value of treating others kindly, using polite language, of love, forgiveness, compassion, and respect for others. We explained that Ahimsa is not limited to refraining from physical violence but includes emotional and mental non-violence. Based on this, we explored together ways of communicating without hurting others, learning to express what we feel and think in a respectful way.

The practice of Ahimsa is deeply linked to communication. Through it, we build bonds, express emotions, and resolve conflicts. Conscious communication not only helps create healthier relationships and an atmosphere of trust, but it also facilitates mutual understanding and the peaceful resolution of misunderstandings.

To illustrate this idea, we told the children a true story about a seventeen-year-old girl who could neither read nor write and who, through a sincere and emotional conversation with her teacher, managed to express her deep desire to learn. Thanks to that human connection, the teacher took it upon herself to teach her. This example helped the children understand the power of empathy, active listening, and communication based on respect and solidarity.

Teaching Ahimsa is, in short, instilling in children the ability to care for life, their own and that of others, through everyday gestures, conscientious words, and relationships based on dignity and consideration for others.
