Medical Checkups and Comprehensive Health Care for Migrant Families
In several parts of India, many young families—fathers, mothers, and children—are forced to leave their hometowns behind when work is scarce. They then embark on an uncertain journey in search of new opportunities, moving to cities where large-scale urban development projects promise employment but do not always guarantee decent working conditions.
During this transitional period, and once settled in labor camps, the families are highly vulnerable. A lack of information about their rights and available resources creates fertile ground for exploitation. Adults, babies, and children often lack adequate access to medical care, basic education, or safe surroundings. Malnutrition, the risk of accidents at construction sites, and exposure to various forms of abuse compound the situation.
Although India has laws to protect migrant populations, their enforcement is limited. Estimates suggest that less than 10% of construction workers are formally employed, leaving the vast majority of them without legal or social protection.
Given this context, Asha-Kiran’s Day Care Centres serve as a vital hub for care and prevention. There, we hold regular medical checkups where health professionals assess each child’s general condition, including aspects such as dental and eye health. Following the checkups, we discuss the results with parents, offering guidance, recommendations, and, when necessary, medical treatment.
We also carry out ongoing outreach work to promote health monitoring and facilitate access to primary care services and nearby hospitals, supporting families throughout the process.
