On the streets of Saint-Louis, Senegal, there are children who walk around unnoticed.
The talibé are children who roam the streets every day in search of food or money to survive. Many are barefoot. Many don't get enough food. Many have learned too soon how to live on the streets. There is something that sets them apart: the absence of a smile.
They are deprived of protection.
For years, this reality has remained in an awkward place: visible to those who want to see it, invisible to the rest.
At Asha-Kiran, we decided to approach this reality with respect, a willingness to listen, and a clear intention to support processes that will allow them to recover something essential that should never be taken away—their childhood. And we are not alone.
Recently, Fundación Magtel acknowledged our work with Talibé children in Senegal as part of its annual social action awards, which aim to highlight and promote initiatives that improve people’s lives and contribute to a more just and inclusive society.
This award is not just a prize. It is a way of saying that these children matter, that they are not invisible, and that their plight deserves to be acknowledged. Because behind every talibé is a child with a story, with a life yet to unfold, with a real chance for a future if their circumstances change.
Thanks to this support, we continue to move forward in our mission to feed, care for, protect, educate, and support these children.
Creating spaces where a child can shower, eat with dignity, and feel safe. Where they can learn again. Where they can smile again. This is our true work.
