I discovered the true meaning of support
My name is Micaela, I’m 24 years old, and I’m from Peru. I’m currently in my third year of the International Social Work degree program at HAN University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands.
This past semester, I had the privilege of completing my internship at Fundación Asha-Kiran’s Vínculos Project in Málaga. Its mission is truly wonderful: to support highly vulnerable migrants.
Asha-Kiran offers Spanish classes to help participants integrate into Spanish society, but that’s just one of the many ways it provides support. During my internship, in addition to helping with the Spanish classes alongside the volunteers, we supported the students with whatever they needed: finding training courses, looking for jobs, handling passport matters, using public transportation, or navigating the immigration regularization process. In many cases, we assisted people who had no supporting network whatsoever, standing by them during such an important time in their lives.
The impact of Fundación Asha-Kiran's work on these people’s lives is immense, and all of this is made possible thanks to the dedication of a team of volunteers and very limited financial resources.
It has been an experience as beautiful as it has been intense. There was always so much to do and, often, very few hands to get it done.
Completing my internship at Asha-Kiran has allowed me to better understand what it means to be part of a foundation, to work directly with vulnerable people, and to discover the enormous importance of cooperation and the commitment of volunteers.
I am deeply grateful for everything I’ve experienced and hope to continue supporting the team, even remotely.
