Caring for smiles, too
A profession dedicated to helping those in need
Some volunteer experiences leave a lasting impression. @ivanazaccara has spent much of this summer working with the Talibé children at our Talibé Children’s Home in Saint-Louis (Senegal), which we run in partnership with @maison_des_talibes.
Ivana is a dentist and decided to put her knowledge and experience to work for children who have very limited access to basic mouth and dental care.
During her stay, she conducted dental checkups and led toothbrushing workshops, teaching the children simple habits to care for their mouth and prevent future issues. She also provided the center with toothbrushes and toothpaste and noted any cases requiring specialized care for referral to the hospital.
Her work didn’t stop at the center’s walls. Ivana also joined our team on visits to the daaras—the Koranic schools where many of the children live—providing healthcare and medical treatment under the supervision of our nurse.
But it would be difficult to describe her time in Saint-Louis solely in terms of healthcare. Because during those weeks, there was also time to play, laugh, hug, listen, and share. In short, it was a time for children who are used to a particularly hard life to receive something as essential as the care and affection of someone who chose to be there for them.
Thank you, Ivana, for your dedication, your professionalism, and for everything you’ve given to our Talibé Children’s Home.
If you’re a dentist, doctor, nurse, or other healthcare professional and would like to offer your expertise to help Talibé children for some time, you can volunteer with us in Saint-Louis. We will provide you with accommodation at the center itself or help you find a room to make your stay more comfortable.
And if you can’t travel to Senegal, you can still help us from wherever you are by becoming a member or making a donation to Fundación Asha-Kiran. Your contribution helps us provide food, literacy, sanitation, healthcare, and protection to these children every day.
There are many ways to change lives. Your way can make a difference, too.
