Family and Financial Planning: Tools for Building a More Stable Future

In Pune, India, we support migrant working families so they can make informed decisions about their health, their financial resources, and their children’s well-being.

For families living in economically challenging conditions, managing the available resources and planning for the future can be especially difficult. When income is low or inconsistent and living conditions change frequently, meeting day-to-day needs often leaves little room to think about tomorrow.

This is the state of things for many of the migrant working families we support at our Day Centers for Migrant Children in Pune, India.

At Asha-Kiran, we believe that access to information and appropriate guidance can help families make decisions with greater autonomy and confidence. For this reason, we organize sessions focused on family planning, financial management, and health care, and address practical issues that directly impact their well-being.

One of the topics covered was family planning, understood as the ability of parents to freely decide—with enough information—how many children they wish to have, and the conditions needed to support their children’s upbringing.

During the sessions, we encouraged families to consult qualified healthcare professionals to receive personalized advice on various family planning methods, while considering their circumstances, needs, and preferences.

Our goal was to facilitate their access to reliable information and promote informed and responsible decision-making, while respecting each family’s choices.

Another important aspect of the meetings was household financial planning.

We shared simple guidelines for organizing family income and expenses, identifying essential needs, distinguishing them from other expenses that can be postponed or avoided.

We also discussed saving as an option that, when circumstances allow, can help cover unexpected expenses and provide some peace of mind in emergencies, rather than as a hard-to-meet requirement when resources are scarce.

For families whose income depends on temporary jobs, having basic financial management tools can contribute to greater stability.

The sessions included recommendations on the importance of using public health services and taking advantage of available health resources.

We also revisited some of the information shared during our nutrition sessions, emphasizing how everyday decisions related to food, hygiene, and care can promote the health of the entire family.

We know that having information alone does not eliminate material hardships, but it can help people make better use of existing resources and know when to seek professional guidance or care.

At the end of the sessions, we were delighted to receive words of gratitude from parents who appreciated the opportunity to gain new knowledge about caring for themselves and their children.

Supporting children also means supporting their families.

When parents have access to information, guidance, and resources to address their challenges, it fosters more stable living conditions and a safer environment for their children's development.

Help us continue to support these families. At Asha-Kiran, we work to ensure that the children of migrant working families have access to the education, nutrition, health care, and support they need as they grow up.

But our commitment also extends to their families, because we know that children’s well-being is closely linked to the living conditions of those who care for them.
