Fortitude: Nurturing Mental Health for Starting Over

Migration is not only about moving to another country. Very often, it also means going through loss, uncertainty, loneliness, and the huge challenge of rebuilding life from scratch in an unfamiliar place.

Thanks to the support of Enrique Toro Gil, president of the Association for the Integral Development of Families Suma Qamaña Spain, we were able to offer the project “Fortitude: Tools for Well-being and Adaptation for Inclusion”—a mental health course specifically designed for migrants who are starting a new life in Spain.

Over the course of five sessions, the participants worked on various aspects related to emotional well-being, adaptation, and resilience. Through practical activities and small-group discussions, they could share experiences, emotions, and tools to cope with the grief of migration, inhabit the present moment, and find greater calm and stability in their daily lives.

When a person begins to feel more emotionally secure, the way they interact with their surroundings changes. Their confidence grows, communication improves, and it becomes easier to tackle challenging situations such as a job interview, learning the language, or adapting to a new community.

In the final session, the participants received a certificate of participation that can be used to support both their immigration regularization process and their personal and professional development.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Enrique Toro Gil for his dedication, approachability, and commitment to this project.
