The Right to Mature and Find Out Who We Are
At our Day Care Centers in India, children learn to understand their rights, discover their abilities, and express their dreams.
All children have the right to learn, play, rest, participate, and develop their abilities. However, for many of them, the circumstances in which they grow up can limit their opportunities and make their dreams take a back seat to the difficulties of daily life.
At Asha-Kiran, we want the children who we support to realize their own abilities, discover what interests them, and begin to envision their future with confidence. We believe that education also involves helping them build self-esteem, affirm their dignity, and understand that their dreams deserve to be heard.
To that end, we set up a special activity at our Migrant Children’s Day Care Centers in Pune (India), where we support the children of working families who move around the country in search of work.
We began by sharing images related to education, health, nutrition, play, hygiene, safety, rest, and care. Then we put a simple question to them: “What do I need to grow and develop?”
Their answers prompted a conversation in which each child was able to share their ideas and listen to their classmates.
Afterwards, they were divided into small groups, and we asked them to draw what «My Rights, My Needs» meant to them. We also talked about their interests, what they feel they're good at, and what they’d like to learn in the future.
It was an opportunity for them to begin looking at their own lives from a different perspective, acknowledging that they have needs, rights, abilities, and desires that deserve attention and respect.
Through activities like this, we seek to sow something that can remain with them as they grow up: being aware of their right to develop their potential and that the challenges in their surroundings should not determine how far they can go.
Help us continue to create opportunities
At our Day Care Centers, education goes far beyond learning to read and write. Each day is an opportunity for children to stay healthy, get proper nutrition, play, socialize, and grow up in a safe environment.
All of this is possible thanks to the people who support our social work.
By becoming a member, you are helping us to sustain this commitment and offer more children the opportunities they need to grow and build their future.
Because their dreams deserve a chance, too.
