Playing, Exploring, and Creating Together
It may be difficult to imagine the material hardships that many of the families we support at our Day Centers in Pune face. These are working families who, through tremendous effort, try to get by in very precarious conditions. Having a stable job, a place to call home, and enough food for their families are already major accomplishments.
With the aim of also supporting parents in raising their children, we organized a special session dedicated to discovering how play, creativity, and learning can be part of everyday life without needing a lot of resources.
Together, we learned how to make toys using recycled materials and items commonly found in any home. We turned old socks and fabric scraps into balls, empty containers into rattles, and created different shapes with popsicle sticks.
We also shared simple ideas to stimulate young children’s curiosity and learning: tracing their fingers on colored powder, handling different types of grains, sorting vegetables by shape or color, and exploring the world through the senses.
The session generated a lot of enthusiasm. Many parents realized that they could provide their children with playful learning experiences without incurring additional expenses. For some, it was also a rare opportunity to participate in creative activities and enjoy quality time together as a family.
At the same time, a common issue came to light: the desire to spend more time with their children, despite the long workdays they endure every day.
While it’s not within our power to change their working conditions, we can support them in finding new ways to strengthen their family bonds and contribute to their children’s development.
A ball made from an old sock can become a chance to play, learn, and grow together.
