Vasant Panchami: The Call of Spring
In the Hindu calendar, Vasant Panchami marks the arrival of spring and is a holiday dedicated to both Kamadeva, the god of love, and Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, wisdom, art, and inspiration.
Although it is not a national holiday, its mood permeates all of society, especially the academic field. Weeks before the celebration, schools, universities and cultural institutions are bustling with activity, organizing music, painting, and literature contests, among other artistic disciplines. On the day of Vasant Panchami, these efforts result in award ceremonies where prayers are said to Saraswati and cultural events are held with the participation of students, educators, parents and members of the community. It is also an auspicious date to start new educational and training centers.
One of the most symbolic rituals of the day consists of placing books, musical instruments and artistic tools before the goddess as offerings of respect and devotion. During this time, these objects are not to be used, as it is believed that Saraswati blesses them, granting inspiration and knowledge to those who employ them. It is also said that, if purity of language is honored, the goddess grants the gift of empowered speech that can deliver any desired impact.
Yellow, a color that symbolizes good fortune, spirituality, and prosperity, permeates this holiday. Yellow flowers decorate temples, schools, and homes, and traditional dishes are dyed with saffron. Even goddess Saraswati herself, usually dressed in white, wears golden hues in her iconography on this day. In many homes, yellow sweets are prepared and shared with family and friends as a gesture of joy and union.
