Emotional development – What we express also teaches

With the intention of fostering healthier family dynamics among the communities living on construction sites—whose children we care for daily at our Day Care Centers—we recently held a parent awareness session focused on emotional development.

We began with some general questions. The responses revealed a common pattern: while many parents could name emotions such as anger, fear, or frustration, few were aware that these emotions can be regulated, and that we are not bound to react impulsively every time we feel them.

Using real-life examples, we explored how emotions are often linked to behaviors, and how those behaviors impact the people around us—especially our children. We explained that learning to manage emotions does not mean suppressing them. Rather, it means finding healthy ways to express what we feel, without harming ourselves or others.

Throughout the session, parents came to understand that they play a pivotal role in the emotional well-being of their children. Repeated displays of negative emotions—whether shouting, threatening, or reacting with violence—leave deep impressions. They shape not only how a child feels in the moment but also how they come to see themselves, and how they will relate emotionally to others in the future.

Although the session covered a wide range of insights, we observed that putting new knowledge into practice takes time. Many parents struggle to apply what they’ve learned to real-life situations. This reflects a deeper need: the need to continue working hand in hand with families, offering not just information, but ongoing support that bridges the gap between theory and lived experience.

Emotional education isn’t an extra—it’s at the heart of care. And it is through that care that families begin to grow together from the inside out.
