Celebrating Republic Day at the Day Centres
Every January 26, India celebrates Republic Day, a date that commemorates its Constitution coming into force and the birth of the country as a sovereign nation. It is a day of celebration, but also of remembrance and acknowledgement of the values that sustain democratic life and coexistence among diverse people and communities.
At our Day Care Centers in Pune, we wanted to share this moment with the children and bring them closer to the meaning of this day in a simple and engaging way. The celebration began with hoisting the flag and singing the national anthem, a ceremony that many found exciting and intriguing. Afterwards, the children took part in various activities: they made little flags and drawings, shared traditional sweets such as laddus, and enjoyed dancing and celebrating together.
Beyond its festive nature, Republic Day offers a valuable opportunity for children to begin to understand what it means to belong to a community and the importance of the values that make coexistence possible. Through these activities, children are introduced to ideas such as respect, shared responsibility, and taking care of the common good.
For many of the children we care for, who come from vulnerable families or internal migration contexts, these celebrations also represent a space for integration and acceptance. Spending a meaningful day together strengthens their sense of community and helps them feel like active members of the society in which they are growing up.
We believe that education is not only about imparting academic knowledge, but also about guiding children to discover values that enable them to become conscious and committed individuals. Celebrations such as Republic Day thus become simple but meaningful moments in which education is experienced as a shared adventure.
