Holi: The Festival of Color, Renewal and Unity
In India, Holi festival bursts during the last full moon in winter. It is a vibrant celebration that welcomes spring and symbolizes rebirth after the death of what must perish. It is a festival of joy, love, and reconciliation that celebrates the victory of good over evil and the barriers of gender, caste, and social status are erased, if only for some instants.
For two days, fire and colors permeate every corner of the country. The festivity begins with big bonfires at dusk, the time when the community comes together to sing, dance and pray with a spirit of renewal. The purifying fires burn past mistakes and mark a new beginning.
The next day, the streets become a sea of colors. White clothes and every skin tone unify under an explosion of colored water and pigmented powders that are thrown amid laughter and joy. In some places, people also throw marigold, rose and jasmine petals at each other while traditional music envelops the gatherings.
One of the most cherished legends of Holi says that Krishna was concerned that his dark blue skin would set him apart from his beloved Radha, so he decided to paint his face, thus becoming a symbol of equality and love without distinctions.

The colored powder, called gulal, is traditionally made from turmeric, flower paste and recycled petals from temples and shrines, with no synthetic products.
Beyond the profusion of color, Holi is also a feast for the senses. Traditional sweets and dishes are shared in family gatherings, reinforcing the spirit of togetherness and community. During this celebration, the warmth of the hearts dissolves all separation, reminding us of the beauty of life's constant resurgence.
