Writing Her Name, Writing Her Future
She’s from Mali, around 18 years old, and doesn’t know how to read or write. As there were enough volunteers today, I was able to sit next to her and give her my undivided attention.
She had trouble holding a pen because she never went to school. I told her she was going to leave class today having learned how to write her name. I have never seen such a bright and happy look on anyone’s face as when she was finally able to write her name in the notebook that she will keep for her class notes.
For me, being with these young migrants is a learning opportunity and a source of joy that is difficult to describe. I feel so humble beside them! I know they have risked everything to reach Spain, and I feel honored to walk the way with them as they start a new life here.
